The FKN (in German “Fachkundenachweis für Seenotsignalmittel”, often called “Pyroschein”) is the German certificate of competence for pyrotechnic distress signals. It entitles you to acquire and store subclass T2 signals such as red rockets and red parachute rockets. Red hand flares of subclass T1 can be bought from the age of 18 without it.
The exam is usually taken together with the SBF See or the SKS. It consists of one question sheet with 15 written questions and is held in German only. Signal pistols are a separate matter: they fall under weapons law and need a firearms ownership card.
The English texts are an unofficial translation for learning purposes. Only the German original published by the authorities is binding. More bilingual catalogues: English home · glossary of German terms.
