Boating in the UK?

In the United Kingdom there is no compulsory boat licence, at sea or inland. Instead there are voluntary RYA courses and certificates, and the ICC for boating abroad. For that we have a separate area with information and over 400 practice questions.

The German SBF See: what you need to know

The SBF See (Sportbootführerschein See) is the German licence for motor boats with more than 15 hp (11.03 kW) on the German maritime waterways. The theory test consists of a question sheet with 30 questions (7 basic and 23 sea-specific questions) and a separate chart navigation task. On this page you practise the question sheets; you pass with at most six wrong answers.

The 72 basic questions are the same as in the SBF Binnen. The sea-specific part covers the COLREGs, the German Maritime Waterways Regulations, lights and shapes, buoyage, charts, tides and weather. The exam and the practical test are held in German only.

The English texts are an unofficial translation for learning purposes. Only the German original published by the authorities is binding. More bilingual catalogues: English home · glossary of German terms.
