The German SKS: what you need to know

The SKS (in German “Sportküstenschifferschein”) is the recommended German licence for skippering yachts in coastal waters up to 12 nautical miles from the shore. It is often required by charter companies. The theory exam consists of 30 questions from a catalogue of 492 questions in four subjects, answered in writing in German, plus a chartwork task. A practical exam on board follows.

In the written exam you answer in your own words, so you do not have to reproduce the model answer word for word. You must, however, be able to understand the German question and write the key terms in German. Use the underlined terms and the glossary to learn them.

Before the SKS you need the SBF See and logged sea miles. The “self-assessed” rating on the exam sheets is only a guide; in the real exam the examiners mark each answer.

The English texts are an unofficial translation for learning purposes. Only the German original published by the authorities is binding. More bilingual catalogues: English home · glossary of German terms.
